"Alignment" in the context of exercise can be described as bringing the different components of the body, bones, muscles and joints, into a working harmony.

About Pilates

Pilates is named after the person who created it, Joseph Pilates. Although Joseph Pilates called his exercises "Contrology", in modern day parlance it is spoken of as "Pilates" or the "Pilates Method". Joseph Pilates specified his technique and approach in his book "Return to Life", published in 1945.

Pilates is a mind-body system of exercise that builds overall body and core strength and flexibility. Pilates addresses and corrects postural imbalances and focuses on obtaining balanced muscle groups. Pilates is done through mat work on the floor, or through equipment work on the Reformer, Wunda Chair or Cadillac. The Pilates equipment both challenges and assists the body in the Pilates exercises, helping students maximize the highest and best use of their body. The teaching emphasis is on correct technique, appropriate repetitions, breathing, alignment, and overall quality of movement.
